Samsung Galaxy S has sold 5 million

Before this year, Samsung’s smartphone fortunes weren’t so great, but come June the company launched the Galaxy S.

We’ve been hearing for a while how well this handset has been going down, but now Samsung has released some official figures to show just how many units the space themed mobile has flogged.

And that magic number is 5 million, Reuters reports. In just four months on sale, which does indeed cement its position as an iPhone rival.

In fact, sales of the Galaxy S have already almost matched the entire total of last year’s smartphone sales for Samsung. The company expects to shift 25 million smartphones in total this year, which will put it just behind Apple, in fourth place in the global smartphone rankings.

Whether its namesake the Galaxy Tab can match the mobile’s success in the tablet world against the iPad is another matter. At the price of £599, more expensive than the equivalent iPad at £529 (and let’s face it, that’s hardly budget or recession friendly as it is), we’re not so sure.
