On Monday, rumours were doing the rounds that a LoveFilm movie streaming service was coming to the PS3.

And now that fact has been officially confirmed by Sony and LoveFilm, with the service to become available on the XMB (Xross Media Bar).

LoveFilm subscribers with a net connected PS3 will be able to stream from a selection of thousands of films, some from major studios, and others which are independent classics. “Most” Lovefilm subscribers, that is, although the press release doesn’t make clear who might miss out.

The PS3’s version of LoveFilm will maintain a list of popular films, with the Most Watched and Highest Rated categories, along with a Pick of the Week. You’ll be able to search through the movie library by title, actor and genre.

Ray Maguire, MD of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, commented: “We know there is a huge interest within our audience for film, and so the addition of LoveFilm to our current range of services is a very natural fit and one which significantly enhances the value proposition of PlayStation 3.”

LoveFilm currently has 1.4 million members, with the PS3 being ensconced in 3 million plus UK households. The console based service is likely to be launched next month, although no official date has yet been given.
