Bing search to incorporate Facebook friends

Facebook and Bing have got together in a partnership whereby the search engine will draw on the recommendations of Facebook’s 500 million user base when it displays results.

This means that when you search for something on Bing (or in web results on Facebook), your friends will pop up displayed next to pages they’ve liked.

As Facebook posted on its blog page: “Your friends have liked lots of things all over the web, and now instead of stumbling across a new movie or having to look at a friend’s profile to see which restaurants they like, we’re bringing everything together in one place… so you can lean on friends to figure out the best websites for your search.”

Bing will also be tying search results for old friends up more closely with Facebook, meaning that if you’re searching for a long lost pal, Microsoft’s search engine will take into account Facebook data. In other words, Bing will prioritise the most relevant people with the name you’re searching for, such as those who you have mutual friends with.

These new features are rolling out gradually in the US over the next few weeks, although no time frame has been given for when they will cross the pond.

  1. Stuff like this makes me glad I ditched Facebook when I did. .
I got so sick of everybody elses crap, applications and “gifts” clogging up my wall. All I actually wanted to do was play poker!.

    Come on, really?
Do we really need to know if “friends” like the crap we search up?
Do they really need to know if I like the crap I search up?
