There are now 100,000 apps on the Android Market, with this fact being confirmed via the AndroidDev Twitter account.

A short and simple tweet broke the news: “One hundred thousand apps in Android Market.”

Android has blazed a highly successful trail this year, with figures released by Gartner in August showing that it is now the third most popular smartphone OS in the world, behind only Symbian and BlackBerry – and it’s right behind BlackBerry (17% versus 18%).

Of course, in terms of apps, Google is still a long way behind Apple, which has well over 250,000 now, some estimates putting the number at 280,000.

BlackBerry App World, on the other hand, has just 10,000, although Rim does point out it prefers quality over quantity. And indeed, many of those quarter of a million plus iOS apps are toilet humour related nonsense or other such chaff.
