Skype to be blocked on Nimbuzz

by Janet Harris

As part of preparations for its planned IPO, Skype has asked rival VoIP firm Nimbuzz to remove support for Skype services.

This will mean that Nimbuzz users will not be able to access Skype services from 31 October.

Skype is believed to be planning to break from all third party VOIP and messaging services before its IPO, which is expected to raise up to $100m.

Skype hopes this will stop it losing market share to rival VoIP providers.

“Skype’s decision is unfair to its own and our users,” said Evert Jaap Lugt, CEO of Nimbuzz. “People want to choose how they communicate and to be able to make calls and send messages, regardless of service, social network, device or operator network.

“Nimbuzz gives them the freedom to do so, Skype does not.”

Third party apps will continue to offer Skype, but only with the company’s written permission.
