Apple overtakes Rim in global mobile phone sales

Apple’s recent success with the iPhone 4 – despite the high profile antennagate and rubber bumper episode – has ensured that the firm has moved up to fourth position in the world mobile rankings.

With its recent record busting quarter in which Apple flogged 14 million of its iconic smartphone, the Cupertino based company has hopped into fourth place ahead of Rim and its BlackBerry.

Apple’s mobile market share shot up from 2.5% to 4.1% (remember this is all mobiles, not just smartphones). Rim made steady progress, but failed to keep pace with Apple, rising from 2.9% to 3.6%.

These figures come from IDC research (via Hexus), and showed that LG was in third place, although the company had dropped from a share of 10.6% to 8.3%. Second was Samsung on 21%, up 0.7%, and top was Nokia with 32.4% (down a worrying 4.1% for the company, but still a big lead).
