Man divorced via Skype

A Muslim man who jokingly told his wife three times that he divorced her, while chatting on Skype, has been made to stand by his actions.

It was reported in the Telegraph that the man typed “talaq”, which translates as “I divorce thee”, three times in a row.

He then asked the advice of Islamic authorities and was horrified to hear that his action terminated his marriage.

The ruling was made in an online fatwa by a leading authority on religious law, Darul Uloom Deobandi.

Islamic law forbids the pair to remarry until the wife marries another man, consummates the marriage and then divorces him.

Even then, they would have to wait another three months before being allowed to marry.

Divorce is an extreme case, but there have been several widely reported cases of employees being sacked after making comments on social networks about their employer.

It just goes to show that the cyberworld can never be separated from the real one, and the same amount of care needs to be applied to each.
