Virgin Media reveals TiVo box details

Following last year’s deal with TiVo, Virgin Media has finally revealed details of its TiVo-powered HD/3D set top box.

The box will provide 1TB of storage and will bring internet services and apps direct to the television without going through a broadband router.

This will allow it to deliver linear TV, on-demand TV and online HD video to the living room TV, without affecting other online activities.

The service will be available later this year and will compete with Sky Anytime+, Sky’s recently launched video-on-demand service and YouView, an IPTV partnership between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva.

YouView is under investigation by Ofcom following complaints from Virgin Media, Sky and others that it could hamper competition.

The complaints mean that YouView is unlikely to launch its first set-top boxes for at least nine months, which of course is good news for Sky and Virgin Media.
