While most industries are struggling to cope with the effects of the recession, a new report from Oxford Economics shows that Britain’s space industry is growth by 10 per cent a year.

The industry now has an annual turnover of around £7.5 billion, with growth in all areas, but particularly in satellite broadcasting and telecommunications.

As a result, jobs opportunities in Britain’s space industry are growing at a rate of around 15 per cent per year.

The report, which looked at 260 leading companies in the UK space sector, predicts that growth will continue in 2010.

This month will see the launch of Hylas-1, Europe’s first satellite dedicated to the delivery of broadband services.

The satellite, which will be operated by UK-based Avanti Communications, will bring broadband to rural areas, where terrestrial technology cannot reach.

The space industry recently launched a Space Innovation and Growth Strategy (S-IGS) which calls for R&D investment from both the industry and government in order to ensure the industry continues to expand and create jobs.
