Halton talks up YouView at Westminster Media Forum

by Janet Harris

YouView’s CEO Richard Halton called the Internet TV platform a “fantastic moment for the TV industry” at the Westminster Media Forum, and said that “TV will thrive” when the service is connected.

A pilot project of the YouView set-top boxes, which will integrate consumers’ current TV sets with the internet, will take place early next year with the service expected to be launched in the middle of the year.

Halton said that the company is looking to forge partnerships with content providers, including arts organisations, public sector organisations and local TV operators.

One of the advantages of the platform is that it allows services to be delivered locally without the need for expensive terrestrial infrastructure.

In preparation for its launch YouView has also announced the appointment of ad agency Adam & Eve, planning and buying agency OMD and retail and experiential marketing agency Momentum.

The price of a YouView set-top box hasn’t been officially revealed but current speculation is putting the price at around £200, which is pretty pricy when compared with rivals such as Sky Anytime + which is free to Sky HD customers if they have Sky broadband.
