Facebook preparing to unveil email service?

Facebook is about to introduce its own email service which will give users an @facebook.com address come Monday, rumour has it.

PC World reports that the service wouldn’t just be some sort of upgraded Facebook inbox as it stands, but an actual webmail client to try and muscle in on Hotmail and Gmail’s turf.

The speculation is that Facebook will announce this at a press event which is happening on Monday, the invitations to which drop hints about messaging.

Other buzz about the system suggests that it will be able to use data on your account, such as the photos you have, friends you talk to the most and so forth, to be able to prioritise emails in your inbox.

With the sound of this, and Facebook having access to your emails, this is another one for privacy activists to quietly steam over. Of course, it’s not definitely happening yet, we’ll just have to wait until next week to find out.

The FT also reports that the social networking site is planning on investing some $450 million to set up a new data centre in North Carolina.
