Call of Duty: Black Ops tops UK chart and breaks records

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the predictable number one when it comes to this week’s UK all-format game chart, as compiled by Chart Track.

In fact, the shooter got off to a record breaking launch week, smashing the previous sales benchmark set by Modern Warfare 2.

In five days, it shifted two million units in the UK, which was 13% more than Modern Warfare 2. In terms of revenue it did even better, netting Activision around £82 million, up just over 20% on Modern Warfare 2.

In fact, Activision grossed more than the entire UK games market over the previous two weeks combined with its latest title. It sold best on the Xbox, with 55% of units sold to Microsoft console owners, and 42% to PS3 players.

Last week also saw another big launch, that of Kinect, the motion control system for the Xbox. Eight Kinect games appeared in the top forty, headed up by Kinect Sports at number four, and Dance Central at number thirteen.

That’s perhaps a little disappointing for Microsoft – the PS3 Move’s lead sporting title, Sports Champions, managed to grab the number two spot on its launch week.

FIFA 11 held behind Black Ops at number two, and Just Dance 2 edged up to number three. Last week’s number one, Football Manager 2011, slid to number five.
