Facebook v1.9 brings Places to BlackBerry

by Darren Allan

A new version of the Facebook app has been released for BlackBerry smartphones.

Version has been unveiled on BlackBerry App World, and it brings with it support for Facebook Places.

Places allows users to check in at real world locations, so friends can see where they’re at. It’s also possible to tag friends who are with you at a place or event, in much the same way Facebookers already do with photos.

However, the service is another thorn in the side of privacy activists, who believe the amount of information which can be gleaned about many Facebook users is already at a dangerous level.

In the States, Facebook recently introduced shopping deals to tempt folks to use Places more. For example, checking in at a Gap store got the first 10,000 Facebookers to do so a free pair of jeans. Similar sort of incentives are expected to arrive this side of the pond eventually.
