Independent spin-off i launches iPad app

The cut price, compact version of the Independent newspaper, simply called i, has launched an app for the Apple iPad.

The print version of the 56 page paper costs 20p, and is designed to appeal to younger readers used to getting their news on the net, with short stories being the order of the day.

And the iPad is the perfect medium for the tabloid sized effort, with the bonus that costs have been reduced if you subscribe on your Apple tablet.

You can get a 10 issue subscription for £1.79, which represents a modest saving of 21 pence. Or you can push the boat out for 20 issues at £2.99, which is saving you just over a pound.

To encourage folks to take a dip, subscribers will get a bonus free five editions at the moment.

Zach Leonard, MD for Digital at the Independent, told rival the Guardian: “Apple doesn’t have price bands that match exactly to the 20p of the i. It is about sampling and getting in as many hands as possible so there will be ‘five free’ to stimulate trial.”

The app will be unleashed on Friday, with Be Broadband in place as the exclusive sponsor for the first six weeks of publication.
