ARM reaches into server and IPTV markets

Speculation is growing that ARM is almost ready to reveal a 64-bit version of its processor chips, which could mark the company’s move into the server or gaming market.

According to rumours, the company has already given a private viewing of the new chip.

ARM is currently solidly positioned in the mobile device market but earlier this year it secured funding from the European Commission for research into using its chips in more energy efficient datacentre platforms.

If the rumours prove true, the new chip will place ARM in competition with Intel and AMD who already have 64-bit processors on the market.

ARM has also been talking to Google about using its architecture in Google TV.

The IPTV service currently only supports Intel Atom Chips which are typically more expensive than ARM’s technology.
