Economist now available in app form on iPad and iPhone

The Economist magazine has decide to get on board with Apple‘s iPad and iPhone in app form.

The publication has made the move despite the fact that sales of its printed mag haven’t declined. In fact, according to the Guardian, The Economist was up 4.2% with its readership numbers in the first half of this year, a rarity amongst printed publications.

If you already subscribe to the print version or the website, the app comes as a free bonus. Otherwise, to get the mag via the app you’ll need to stump up £3.49 per issue (slightly cheaper than the hard version, which is priced at £4).

The Economist site already has around 100,000 paying subscribers. It hopes to reach the million mark in digital subscribers by the year 2013, and obviously this app is part of that master plan.

Oscar Grut, The Economist’s Digital MD, told the Guardian: “It took us 160 years to reach the first million of our 1.5m print readers and we expect to reach a million in digital in three years.”

“With the growing popularity of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, like the iPhone and the iPad, which offer an immersive reading experience, we are seeing strong demand and as a result a big opportunity for a publication like ours is emerging.”

Presumably an Android app might follow? Watch this space…
