Paris-based Eutelsat Communications has announced that its KA-SAT satellite has been flown to the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and is on track for a 20 December launch.

The Astrium-built satellite will serve over one million users across Europe and the Mediterranean basin, via 80 spotbeams and ten gateways connected to the Internet via a fibre backbone.

With a throughput of over 70 Gigabits per second KA-SAT is the world’s most powerful spacecraft.

It will provide competitively-priced satellite-delivered services including Internet access, enterprise networks, broadcasting, IPTV and HD digital cinema.

It will also support the take-up of Eutelsat’s Tooway broadband service, boosting delivery speeds to 10 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload.

KA-SAT will compete with UK-based Avanti’s HYLAS 1 broadband satellite, which is fuelled up and ready to launch on 26 November.

HYLAS 1 is expected to offer download speeds of up to 8Mbps across the UK from £25 a month.
