TalkTalk begins trialling anti-malware system

TalkTalk is to officially begin testing an anti-malware system designed to protect its customers from dodgy virus-laden websites.

And this time, the company has actually asked the limited amount of customers taking part in the first official trials whether they want to take part.

Previously, TalkTalk had experimented with URL scanning without telling anyone, something that the ICO slapped the ISP’s wrist for back in September.

TalkTalk stresses that the URL scanning system records all web addresses which the ISP has been asked to connect to, but doesn’t log who sends the request or any other personal data, thus keeping everything anonymous.

Once it goes live, surfers who opt in to the anti-malware scheme will be warned when trying to visit those sites which have been shown to carry viruses or other nasties via the scanning process.

The trials will run over the next few weeks. The company wrote on its blog page: “These days homes have so many devices hooked up to the web, working across multiple platforms, that keeping them all secure is harder than ever. Our plan is to provide an additional level of security at a network level – in other words stopping the bad stuff before it gets into your home in the first place.”
