Sony and Microsoft release motion controller numbers

Microsoft has come forward with the initial sales figures for its Kinect motion controller, followed in short order by Sony releasing the latest on its Move sales.

Microsoft estimated Kinect sales at 2.5 million units, which is halfway to its stated target of 5 million by the end of the year. Given that Kinect has only been out for three and a half weeks – and less than that outside the US – it would seem that figure is definitely on target.

Sony then declared that its Move system has shifted 4.1 million units globally. However, it has been on sale for considerably longer, two and a half months, in fact.

And as the Register Hardware points out, Sony is counting units shipped out to retailers, whereas Microsoft’s figure is the number actually flogged and in the hands of consumers.

By our reckoning, Kinect may be behind on pure numbers, but given the time frame it has sold 2.5 million in, Microsoft may be pulling close to level at the end of the year. From thereon out and through 2011, it’ll be the quality of the games which pushes the respective motion controllers further along in terms of sales.

  1. It’s not the controller it’s the games. To be honest, neither has anything superb yet in the software ranks. though I’ve been enjoying Tumble for PS3. It’s very good.

Unless both companies start coming up with great games, it’ll just sit in the corner gathering dust. Like the Wii.

Wii is out of the spotlight now, sales are dropping, so Ninty must be prepping the Wii 2. But will it have the same market penetration as the original Wii? Probably not.
