BT names front runners in the Race to Infinity

Ready for another update on which towns across the UK are currently leading BT‘s Race to Infinity scheme?

If you’ve forgotten, this particular race began at the start of October, with folks voting for their home exchange to be hooked up to next-gen fibre. The top five exchanges are guaranteed to get super-fast broadband by early 2012 at the very latest.

At the halfway point in mid-November – the race is being run until the end of 2010 – two towns were first past the 1,000 vote mark: Caxton in Cambridgeshire and Malvern in Worcestershire.

As of today, Caxton has been holding strongly, and is in the number two spot. It has been blown past by Blewbury in Oxfordshire, however (something of a boat race theme going on there).

In third place is Castleton, Newport, followed by Madingley in Cambridgeshire, and Whitchurch, Hampshire. Malvern has slipped down to number ten. Apparently almost 300,000 votes have been cast across the country in total.

John Petter, Managing Director of BT’s Consumer division, said: “Thousands have voted, but there is still a long way to go before we reach the finishing line and everything to play for.”

“Super-fast speeds can transform your online life whether you’re social networking, gaming, streaming video, uploading or downloading. So please vote now and don’t forget to spread the word by passing it on to your friends on Facebook and Twitter to get your area to the top of the scoreboard.”

BT aims to deliver fibre to two-thirds of the UK by 2015. It has also just announced its first 1Gbps broadband trial, which is almost ten times the speed of the company’s current super-fast fibre.
