Google Nexus S phone unveiled

Google has taken the wraps off the sequel to its Nexus One smartphone, which at one point looked like it would never happen.

The Google Nexus S is built by Samsung (not HTC, who manufactured the original Nexus), and it’s a pretty slick looking device. The phone comes bearing a 4 inch 800 x480 resolution “contour” display, meaning that it’s slightly curved not only for aesthetic appeal, but also because it fits your cheek more comfortably when you’re talking into it.

Google bangs on about the super-AMOLED display at length, calling it a brighter screen with higher contrast, and very glare resistant, so good for outside use when the sun is shining (or indeed glaring back at you off the snow).

Nestling on the back of the phone is a 5 megapixel camera, and there’s also a front-facing camera for video chatting.

Other specs include a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 16GB of memory, assisted GPS, bluetooth, wi-fi and 3G. It will also ship with Android 2.3, Gingerbread, and will be the first smartphone to do so. Tempting…

Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering at Google, commented: “Gingerbread is the fastest version of Android yet, and it delivers a number of improvements, such as user interface refinements, NFC support, a new keyboard and text selection tool, Internet (VoIP/SIP) calling, improved copy/paste functionality and gyroscope sensor support.”

The Nexus S will be out just before Christmas, on December 20th, at Carphone Warehouse. It’ll cost a rather hefty £550 sim-free, and contracts will start at £35 per month with the handset coming for free.

  1. By the looks of the specs, take the Galaxy S and put a Google brand on it… oh, and Gingerbread, but that should be coming to the Galaxy S anyways
