Gingerbread incoming for Samsung Galaxy S

Good news for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung’s popular smartphone.

According to Samsung Mobile India’s Twitter feed (spotted by T3), the fact that the mobile will get Gingerbread, otherwise known as Android 2.3, has been confirmed.

The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: “Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS.”

We assume they mean Gingerbread, and “gingerbeard” was a spelling slip, and it doesn’t refer to some hitherto unheard of version of Android modelled on a red-headed pirate theme (“Would ya like to go to yer inbox me hearty? Arrrr…”).

When further questioned as to when Android 2.3 would be arriving on the Galaxy S, Samsung Mobile India said: “There is no ETA as of now.”

So it could be a while yet. It certainly isn’t likely to be this month, as the Nexus S is due out on December 20th and will be the first handset to carry Gingerbread. However, it could possibly be January. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.

Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications, a technology which can read chips embedded in the likes of movie posters or T-shirts).
