Amazon downed, but not by Anonymous

It seems that the Amazon website was down for about 30 minutes yesterday evening, in not just the UK but a number of European countries.

But online shoppers didn’t have their Christmas gift buying interrupted by Anonymous, the activist group which calls itself “fighters for Internet freedom”, and which has come out strongly in support of WikiLeaks with denial of service attacks. It was actually a simple hardware failure, Amazon is stating.

Although some sources, such as Sky News, are reporting the incident as an “apparent attack by WikiLeaks supporters dubbed hacktivists.”

There was some speculation about whether Anonymous, the group which organises Operation Payback, would attack Amazon next in revenge for Amazon Web Services dropping the WikiLeaks website.

However, Anonymous posted on Twitter: “WE REPEAT: We can not attack Amazon.com. To some journalists: check your sources well please.”
