O2 confirms Android 2.2 for Dell Streak

As O2 promised earlier this week, the Android 2.2 (or Froyo) update for the Dell Streak has now been pushed out.

Against all expectations – well, our expectations anyway – although there is a caveat. Some Streak owners still appear unable to get the upgrade.

Yesterday on Twitter, O2 posted: “The update’s out today but there are alot of Streaks to do! It shouldn’t be long now, though.”

A punter who claimed he still couldn’t get it this morning was told: “It’s available now but because of demand, you may need to try a few times to get it.”

So there you have it – it’s out, you should be able to grab it, but you might have to try a few times before success becomes apparent.

“It’s no wonder Streak owners are keen to get the upgrade, seeing as they’ve been bumbling along on Android 1.6 previously.”

Great “research” as usual – in September O2 released their infamous 2.1 upgrade, which caused more problems than it solved, but I got it and had been using it for 3 months.

I now have 2.2 on my phone, and as usual, new OS version means teething problems – some good, some bad, some damn annoying…

I’d love to know who makes the decision at Dell about what to change, because they’re clearly an idiot and should be fired – the removal of the Streak specific keyboard (which was a joy), the front camera in 2.1 not being active, the new Home screen in 2.2, all of which cause problems for Streak users, and none of which we wanted as users!

@jake, depends on which network you’re on – Three & T-Mobile have their Galaxy S update to Froyo, so you’ll not have long to wait for O2…

Hi Phil, You’re quite right, apologies for the error… completely forgot about the 2.1 upgrade (which I wrote several news stories about… memory just isn’t what it used to be… :-/ )

Jerris, the upgrade should be made available via your handset, although it is still rolling out to some.

The latest O2 posted yesterday on Twitter was: “Hi Craig, yep, the Froyo update is still rolling out. It’s in high demand though so keep trying to check for the update.”

I have received the official notification on my streak locked to O2 but sadly, I can’t even get past the backup stage?! 45 minutes and still at 0%, perhaps I am being impatient?
