BT fibre to hit 600,000 phone lines in 2011

BT will deliver super-fast fibre to 600,000 UK telephone lines by the end of this year, up considerably from the current count of 45,000.

That’s according to analysts Point Topic, who state that this figure will represent a coverage level of 3% of all UK broadband lines being super-fast come the close of 2011. Super-fast meaning speeds of over 25Mbps using fibre-to-the-cabinet or premises.

According to the firm, BT Infinity was adding 4,000 new orders every week by October 2010. That’s expected to rise to 9,000 new connections per week in the first half of this year, and then step up to 14,000 in the second half of 2011, to reach Point Topic’s forecast levels.

Tim Johnson, Chief Analyst at Point Topic, commented: “We’re sticking our neck out a bit with this. You have to assume that BT can achieve a big increase in its super-fast roll-out rate during 2011.”

He also notes: “Our forecast is still very vulnerable to a wide range of potential problems. It could be hit by anything from the weather to a double-dip recession.”
