Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 won’t get Froyo

News has arrived from Sony Ericsson that the Android 2.1 update for the Xperia X10 which arrived very tardily in November will be the last one the smartphone receives.

So X10 owners can forget about Gingerbread or even Froyo (Android 2.2). Why have Sony decided to end the line at Android 2.1?

Techtree.com spotted the reason mentioned on SE’s Twitter feed: “We believe the features included in the Android 2.1 phone are on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of 2.2 #X10.”

Which seems a bit weak… At any rate, this doesn’t mean upgrades are stopping completely for the X10, just OS updates.

In a later tweet, Sony Ericsson notes: “There will be no further Android updates to the handset but there will still be system updates implemented.”

A multi-touch (limited pinch/zoom in the browser and some third party apps) system update is expected for the smartphone in the next couple of months. Although if it’s anything like the wait for Eclair, in the summer.
