Apple App Store about to hit 10 billion downloads

Apple is about to hit another big milestone with its highly successful App Store.

The company has put up a big splash page on its site, with a counter which shows the sales of apps steaming upwards by 1,000 apps every few seconds.

The counter is currently on 9.895 billion apps flogged, so is about to hit the magic 10 billion mark. What’s magic about it, you ask? We don’t know… isn’t everything Apple does magic and revolutionary by default these days?

Anyway, there can be no argument that it’s a steaming great load of apps shifted and profit made. By our reckoning, and maths which might be horrendously wrong, it should take around 90 hours for the ten billion to clock up at the current rate. Hopefully that’s about right (we usually did quite well at the numbers game in Countdown back in the olden days when Carol was still on it).

That would make midday Saturday the time when the App Store is due to hit the magic number. Why’s that important? Because if you download the ten billionth app, Apple is giving away a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

That is, of course, assuming that the countdown timer is roughly accurate in some respect. At any rate, if you get lucky towards the end of the week, you’ll be in for quite a treat.
