Apple App Store hits 10 billion downloads

Apple has reached the 10 billion download mark with its app store.

As we guessed earlier this week, the 10 billion mark would be hit at midday Saturday and it was, or just before then.

No doubt the pace of downloads speeded up this morning, with folks hoping to be the lucky 10 billionth customer. Apple has promised to give away a $10,000 iTunes gift card to that fortunate soul.

The ten billion countdown page now simply says: “Thank you. Ten billion times.” It then adds that the promotion has ended, and to come back to the page later to see who has bagged the $10,000 worth of iTunes booty.

If you downloaded something and are in with a shout, best of British to you. We didn’t, but then we never enter any competitions any more (not since the incident at that village fête tombola involving the gooseberry jam).
