Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gets previewed

The Xperia Play, also known as the PlayStation Phone, was spotted in China last week.

And now Engadget has got its hands on the device for a thorough preview test. The site confirmed the specs we reported last week: a 4 inch display (the resolution is 854 x 480), 1GHz processor and Android 2.3 on board.

Engadget also noted the display has good colour performance and viewing angles, and the fact that it’s rumoured to be powered by a Bravia engine for better video playback.

The good news is that apparently the build quality is solid, and the device is comfortable to hold. The one niggle the tester had was that the balance perhaps isn’t quite as spot on as the PSP Go.

So it all sounds quite promising, although there is one major question to be asked of Sony. Exactly how does the PlayStation Phone stack up with the upcoming release of the PSP2 later this year? Will sales of one affect the numbers of the other?
