Grand Theft Auto was almost canned says a game developer

February 2, 2011

Gary Penn, a game developer at DMA design, admitted in an interview that the original Grand Theft Auto game was almost canned.

The original Grand Theft Auto was a 2D, birds eye view game that was essentially a very flawed cops and robbers style game.

The game was released in 1997 and was created by DMA design. However in an interview with Gamasutra, Penn stated that the game nearly didn’t make it onto the shelves, he also claimed the game was a real mess for years.

“It never moved on, it never went anywhere. It never really felt like it was going anywhere. It was almost canned. The publisher, BMG Interactive, wanted to can it, as it didn’t seem to be going anywhere.” He said.

Penn stated that one of the main flaws with the game was the behaviour of the police, just generally acting poorly, and the way they originally worked was, “Just rubbish.”

However, there was a bug that caused all the policemen to sometimes go a little mental and violent in the game, and it was that bug that set the game we now know into motion.

The game was eventually released and became a hit, not because of the story, but because of the fun game play.

Roaring a 2D car through cities, jumping over broken bridges, drive by shooting drug lords, criminals, and even policemen, mercilessly running over everything in your path… 14 years later and its still what people seem to look for in the Grand Theft Auto games.

Penn stated, “It was less about the mission stuff, which we always thought was another mess, and more about just general play, just being able to piss around.”
