Android 2.4 arriving in April?

Here’s another one from the Android rumour mill, and this one is a bit of an oddity indeed.

It seems that Pocket Lint has been talking to ViewSonic about the company’s upcoming ViewPad 4 smartphone.

The handset will apparently boast Android 2.4 – although it won’t be the codenamed “ice cream” version as previously thought. In fact, Android 2.4 will simply keep the name Gingerbread, and will just feature one alteration.

Android 2.4 will have the ability to run dual-core apps (designed for Android 3.0) on single core devices. The current Gingerbread, 2.3, can’t manage this.

And as the ViewPad 4 is out in April, we can expect Android 2.4, or Gingerbread II, to arrive then. In theory, anyway; this is just a rumour although other sources across the net have also picked up similar whispers.

If this turns out to be the truth of the matter, it does seem rather messy of Google. Messy like a dropped ice cream.
