HP TouchPad unveiled, webOS tablet

There’s another tablet on the way – don’t all cheer at once, now.

Although at least this is a bit different to the legion of Android tablets which is stomping towards 2011 like an army of homicidal cyborgs sent back from the future. Perhaps.

HP has unveiled the TouchPad, a webOS powered slate which is happily hopping on the iPad bandwagon.

Vital statistics include a 9.7 inch display (with a resolution of 1024 x 768), Snapdragon dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 16 or 32GB of storage, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, bluetooth, wi-fi and 3G.

Also on board is an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, a USB port, and of course HP pushes the line that the device supports Flash 10.1 while web browsing unlike a certain other fruity tablet.

True multi-tasking is promised, and some neat little features such as “touch to share”, which allows the user to simply touch a compatible webOS smartphone against the tablet to transfer a URL. Nifty.

Jon Rubinstein, Senior VP and General Manager of Palm Global Business Unit at HP (he was the CEO of Palm before the HP purchase), commented: “Today we’re embarking on a new era of webOS with the goal of linking a wide family of HP products through the best mobile experience available.”

“The flexibility of the webOS platform makes it ideal for creating a range of innovative devices that work together to keep you better connected to your world.”

The TouchPad is due out this summer. Pricing is yet to be revealed, but doubtless you’ll have to cross HP’s Palm with more than a few pieces of silver.
