iPad 2 production already underway

Apple is already cranking out the iPad sequel on its production lines.

That’s according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, which has been talking to sources who are “familiar with the matter”.

The WSJ says that the same sources claim the iPad 2 will be both thinner and lighter than the original tablet, and will have at least one camera for video conferencing duties.

This matches up with the alleged spotting of the iPad sequel at the launch of Murdoch’s The Daily e-paper last week, where an eyewitness said that the device had a front-facing camera.

Whether the iPad will come with twin cameras, like the Galaxy Tab, is still an unknown, although other sources we’ve reported on have claimed the iPad 2 will boast a 3 megapixel camera capable of 720p HD recording.

The WSJ also makes it clear that another previous (older) rumour, that the iPad 2 might come with a retina display, is not happening. Although apparently a faster processor is in the slate.

The iPad 2 is expected to launch in April, one year on from the original tablet.
