Mobile World Congress begins today, so prepare for a flood of mobile device related announcements.

The first biggie of which was last night ahead of the start of MWC, where Samsung held a press event to officially unveil the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The S II smartphone is the thinnest in the world, Samsung claims, at just 8.5mm thick. That just pips the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, which when announced claimed the same title with an 8.7mm profile at its thinnest point.

We knew the specs already, but to recap, it has a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a dual-core 1GHz processor, an 8 megapixel camera (capable of full HD), bluetooth, wi-fi and the option of 16 or 32GB of memory.

The phone runs Android Gingerbread, with the TouchWiz interface on top. It also boasts social, reading, music and games hubs to better organise your smartphone experience. And interestingly enough, encryption of data is supported on both mobile and SD card, perhaps making the handset a slightly more tempting proposition for business users.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 slate is the sequel to the original Tab, the major difference being a 10.1 inch display which brings it up to the same size as the iPad. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800.

The Tab 10.1 also has an 8 megapixel camera, capable of full HD playback and recording, and a 2 megapixel front-facer for video conferencing. It runs the Honeycomb or Android 3.0 operating system.

There’s been some controversy over how well the original Galaxy Tab has sold, with Samsung announcing sales figures (of two million in two months) which turned out to be shipment figures.

Exactly how many the tablet has actually sold to consumers is an unknown, but the success of its Tab 10.1 bigger brother is likely to hinge on the asking price. The original Tab is now down to £399 at Amazon, when it was initially launched to retail at £529.
