Steve Ballmer talks Windows Phone 7 for 2011

Steve Ballmer has made his keynote speech at Mobile World Congress, which he used to push the upcoming features of Windows Phone 7.

The Microsoft CEO’s speech was broken down point-by-point in an article on the Inquirer, but the basic gist was that there are some cool new features coming to WP7 which are going to help move the operating system. Thus far, since its release in the final quarter of 2010, it hasn’t performed all that well.

The two biggest developments in the pipeline are multi-tasking for third party apps, and IE9 is also coming to the mobile platform in an update “later this year”. A demo showed IE9 on WP7 running faster than Safari on an iPhone 4, although as the Inquirer notes this was a hand-picked demo on the IE9 test drive website.

Microsoft also showed off the fact that WP7 smartphones will be able to interact with the Xbox 360 and Kinect motion controller. Apparently a handset owner will be able to partake in a game someone else is playing on Kinect.

Of course, Microsoft also took the opportunity to bring Nokia into the picture, and underlined how the newly formed partnership of the two companies is going to be a big boon to the operating system, giving access to a whole host of new customers.

  1. The problem here is the “coming later” to Windows Phone 7.

This basic functionality is not here now, so anyone who buys a Windows Phone 7 handset now will be missing important functionality, and then left waiting for months or years for it to be fixed.
