A new feature has been introduced to the iPlayer, to expand the catch-up TV service to cover not just BBC programmes, but shows from other channels.
Paul Clark, Head of Audience-Facing Services, Programmes and On Demand, explains on the Beeb’s Internet blog that via metadata-sharing partnerships, links will be provided to playback pages for programmes on ITV, Channel 4, S4C, Five, SeeSaw.com and MSN Video Player.
This content can be located via the iPlayer’s search function, or by using the schedule widget.
Clark commented: “It’s been a while in the making, but this has been an extremely ambitious and technically complicated project. We wanted to get to a user-experience that feels intuitive and not ‘bolted on’, even though the experience is as much reliant on the data feeds from our partners as our own engineering.”
He also noted that due to technical limitations, there may not be images displayed for some of these non-BBC programmes, but just a text listing.
More channels and external content are expected to be added in time.
