iPad designer considering move back to UK

Jonathan “Jony” Ive is Senior VP of Industrial Design at Apple, and the principal designer of the iPad, iPod, iPhone and other computers.

But it appears that his successful career at the Cupertino company has come to something of a crossroads, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

On the one hand, he is considering a move back to the UK and his £2.5 million mansion in Somerset. This is reportedly because he wants his sons educated in this country.

On the other hand, the Apple board certainly don’t want him leaving the States. In fact, the grapevine has it that Ive could be lined up to take over from Steve Jobs, who has gone back on medical leave.

Ive is apparently already awaiting a golden handcuffs payment – an incentive to keep an employee with the company long term – to the tune of £18 million. This would take his personal fortune up to around the £80 million mark. He has been at Apple since 1992.
