O2 puts back Sony Ericsson Xperia Play release date

by Darren Allan

O2 has put the brakes on regarding the release of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

The so-called PlayStation phone is due out in a week’s time, but O2 won’t be offering the handset then due to some issues their testing team has run up against.

Chief tester Stuart Hibberd posted on the company blog to describe some problematic software bugs which have cropped up during the many weeks of testing the Xperia Play.

These flaws apparently mean that customers wouldn’t “have a great experience” with the gaming phone, and are serious enough to delay O2′s launch. The company says it’s currently working with Sony Ericsson to resolve these issues.

How long the delay will be isn’t specified, although Hibberd mentions that work will be ongoing over the next couple of weeks, which suggests the week of April 11th as a hopeful target.

Bad news for those of you who wanted a white Xperia Play to wave in iPhone 4 owners’ faces, because O2 has the exclusive on the snowy coloured version of the handset.

Of course, another question is have the other operators hit similar stumbling blocks and just not said anything yet?
