Major BBC website outage caused by faulty switch

The day before yesterday, the BBC website and related services such as the iPlayer were hit by an outage for an entire hour, from around 11pm to midnight.

This prompted speculation about hacking attacks, but it turned out that a hardware problem was to blame.

At the time, the Beeb said it was a “major network problem”, although the Daily Mirror reports the exact nature of the issue. A faulty switch, apparently.

The paper cited a staff memo from contractors Siemens it had got a look at, which said: “Cause of issue: Faulty Switch. Services Impacted: Everything.”

That just about sums it up, although they forgot to add: “Excrement hitting the fan: Plentiful.”
