Today is the day the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play launches. At some retail outlets, anyway.
O2 had already declared a delay on the gaming phone due to software issues, and yesterday, we heard the news that Vodafone wouldn’t be stocking the Xperia Play from April 1st, due to supply chain problems.
Sony Ericsson, however, was positive the launch was going ahead, just not with as much volume as initially planned. The company issued a statement to say: “We can confirm that the Xperia Play handsets are still planned to launch in the UK for April 1st, as originally communicated.”
“However… we have experienced a freight issue that may impact the number of Xperia Plays arriving at some retail outlets. This said, consumers can purchase Xperia Play as of April 1st at a number of stores across the UK.”
And according to an article on TechRadar, the Xperia Play will definitely be on sale today at Orange, Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u.
Although in its statement, Phones4u claimed it would have plenty of “sock”, and we assume this means stock and they’re not offering some white stripy Xperia Play branded foot-warmers.
Orange told TechRadar: “The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is due to go on sale tomorrow (1 April) as planned.”
Although on the Orange site this morning, the PlayStation phone is still marked as “coming soon”. Hopefully stock will be in retail outlets – let us know if you’re venturing forth today.
On the other hand, The Carphone Warehouse website does have the phone marked as in stock.
