Windows 7: How to turn off Windows features (IE?)

by Jeff Ferdinand

Windows has some nice features, and then it has some not so nice features. People’s opinions on which is which will differ, a lot. No worries, though. You can turn off Windows features you don’t want or need.

Do you use Chrome or Firefox? Turn off IE, and you aren’t limited to just turning that off.

There is a quick step on this one, so if you are in a hurry skip to the last.

Step 1: Click your start menu, then Control Panel and choose Programs and Features.

Programs and Features

Step 2: On the upper left corner of the window that comes up click “Turn Windows features on or off”.

Upper left click

Step 3: As you can see in the image below there are many things you can turn off. When you uncheck an item and next start your machine Windows doesn’t load the files for that feature, checking the item and then restarting will enable it for use again.

Features can off

Quick Step: And as promised, here is the quick way to get there. Just type “features” in the search box of your start menu then choose “Turn Windows features on or off”.

Quick Step

This can be a useful when tweaking your system and getting rid of those things that you don’t use. Being able to turn off IE is a nice feature of Windows 7.
