White iPhone 4 launched, plot (and handset) thickens

by Darren Allan

It’s been a beautiful sunny spring week, and one in which the white iPhone 4 has finally emerged gleaming in the British sun.

It went on sale yesterday, although in limited amounts as the stock is a little thin on the ground (O2 for example only has the handset on offer for contract customers, there’s no PAYG model thus far).

What’s not so thin, however, is the white iPhone 4 itself. We thought the only difference between the snowy incarnation and the black version was the colour scheme, but it turns out we were wrong.

The white Apple smartphone is – pause for dramatic intake of breath – thicker. Yes, thicker. Chunkier. Fatter. Not as svelte. Brick-like. Reminiscent of eighties mobiles with batteries the size of a briefcase.

Okay, we’re getting a bit carried away. But the Internet is currently aflame with reports that the white iPhone is actually 0.2mm thicker than the black version. Instead of 9.3mm thick, it’s 9.5mm.

Why? The metal innards might be the same size, but the coloured panels sandwiching it are just that little bit wider, possibly something to do with ensuring the white paint doesn’t peel, as has previously been rumoured.

The end result is hardly earth-shattering news, of course, but when pictured together you can see the difference between the two models. It also means that the white iPhone 4 might not fit into some cases, if they’re tightly fitted to the original handset.
