Vodafone puts chargers in 500 London black cabs

Reckon you get charged too much when you hail a black cab in London? Now Vodafone is offering you the opportunity to get charged a bit more.

Not in monetary terms, mind, rather the company is installing 500 or so black cabs with mobile chargers so customers can top up their smartphone batteries and offset a little bit of the cost of that expensive cross-London journey against their home electricity bill.

A further service is also provided to Vodafone users, who will be able to pay for the taxi ride using their handset, having the fare added to their mobile bill. Handy if you’ve not got any cash on you.

Perhaps Vodafone could go a little further and also provide some custom ringtones as replies to the driver’s inevitable questions, for when you’re too tired to make the effort to talk.

You know the sort of thing: “Yes… quite…”; “Hmm…”; and “Did you really, was he as much of an idiot in real life as he is on TV?”

This is all part of a big advertising campaign to highlight Vodafone’s recent improvements in coverage for the London area.

You’ll be able to spot the Voda taxis as they’ll be splashed with company branding. Some cabs will start carrying the chargers from this week, with more being rolled out as we move into the summer.

How will they deal with all the people that forget their phones were charging and leave their taxis without taking them with them?
