Amazon tablet to launch this year?

by Darren Allan

It seems that Amazon might be about to dip its toe in the tablet market.

The company already has a slate of sorts, the Kindle e-reader, but word from the sources of DigiTimes suggests that the company is planning a proper iPad rival.

Rumour has it that Taiwan-based Quanta Computer has received the nod from Amazon to produce the online retailer’s tablet PC, with peak monthly production expected to reach 700,000 to 800,000 units.

Shipping will apparently begin in the second half of 2011, which would mean an Amazon tablet could be on sale before the year is out.

Further whispers reckon Amazon might pitch this as a budget tablet, likely running Android, naturally enough.

Attacking on price would certainly be the obvious route for Amazon to take in the battle against the iPad – a strategy which has been surprisingly neglected by many.

Having said that, quality £300 tablets are now emerging – the Acer Iconia Tab A100 for instance, and Samsung has also been prompted to cut its original Galaxy Tab down to this price level.

The slate market is becoming ever more competitive and flooded, so Amazon will certainly have to pull something out of the hat to spark sales.
