O2 to offer Sony Ericsson Xperia Play next month

by Darren Allan

If you’ve been waiting for the white Xperia Play – which O2 has the exclusive on – then you’ll have to wait a bit longer.

O2′s story with the PlayStation phone is a long and convoluted one, and while the phone rolled out on April 1st at some stockists, the oxygen-themed network ran into technical troubles and bugs which forced it to delay the launch.

In mid-April O2 issued an update to say that the handset was nearly ready to go on sale – but it turned out it wasn’t.

Stuart Hibberd, the head of O2’s testing team, has posted another update on the company blog which states that the Xperia Play will now be on sale in June.

He wrote: “All the bugs we identified in our testing have now either been fixed or are being worked on and we’re confident that they will be fixed shortly.”

“We’ll be working closely with Sony Ericsson throughout May and if everything goes to plan we’ll be happy to approve the Play and put it on sale, both the black version and our exclusive white version.”

Mind you, they said pretty much exactly that back in mid-April, so who knows if this will be another cursed white phone which will be beset with a series of ongoing delays.
