First tweet made from Everest summit

by Darren Allan

A British climber has sent the first ever tweet stood on the peak of Mount Everest.

The dynamically named Kenton Cool was sponsored by Samsung, and tweeted the high-altitude message using the company’s spangly new Galaxy S II smartphone.

So what was the message sent back down to Earth? Kenton tweeted: “Need…. more…. oxygen…. can’t…..breathe…”

Of course not. He actually tweeted: “Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset!”

Personally we’d have gone for: “I’m on top of the world, ma, tweeting down on creation! Thanks to the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset. Fingers are a bit numb though.”

As his tweet indicates, this is the ninth time Kenton has made it to the top of Everest. The mobile signal was provided by the installation of a 3G station at base camp by network operator Ncell.

His most recent update, an hour ago, read: “Back at basecamp safe and sound after our amazing adventure!! The @samsunguk equipment was simply amazing.”
