Samsung Galaxy S II NFC variant coming

by Darren Allan

It seems that Samsung will ship an NFC-toting version of the Galaxy S II smartphone in the UK, despite the fact that the company had previously said this wasn’t going to happen.

Mobot.net broke this story after hearing from two Samsung customer support staff who confirmed that an NFC version of the S II should be out in the UK next month.

One of them told Mobot.net: “We have received a confirmation that the Near Field Communication ‘NFC’ version of the Galaxy S II should be available in the UK by June 2011.”

“Kindly know that there are no plans to launch the Galaxy S II in 32GB model in the UK,” she added.

TechRadar sought confirmation from a more reliable source than customer service reps, and had word from the head office itself that the NFC version is indeed in the pipeline.

However, this confirmation cited a release date of “later this year”, so that would indicate that a June release isn’t on the cards.

Bringing an NFC version of the handset out in June would certainly leave a lot of miffed customers who have just bought the standard version of the S II, assuming the price remains about the same.

So it makes sense it would be much later this year, to minimise any ill-feeling from those who have just forked out for a non-NFC Galaxy S II.

Although the question is, will some folks hold off now for the superior version of the phone later in 2011? We guess that depends on exactly how much later in the year “later” actually is… more news as and when we hear it.
