Nintendo has announced details regarding the release of several classic games on its handheld console systems, via its online download services

Fans of the Zelda series of games will be delighted to learn that the classic title – Legend of Zelda: Four Swords – will be given away for free.

The offer is in celebration of Zelda’s 25th anniversary, for which Nintendo has planned a number of exciting events.

Those who own a Nintendo DSi or a DSi XL will be able to download the game from the DSiWare store sometime in September.

Those who have purchased a Nintendo 3DS will be able to download via the eShop.

The original game was available for the Game Boy Advance and focused on the use of multiplayer gaming, with a four player cop-op mode giving the game its ‘Four Swords’ title.

Also specified were details regarding two other classic Nintendo games; Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and Metroid 2: Return of Samus.

Both titles will be available on the 3DS later this year, although a specific date was not given.

Metroid 2 was released all the way back in 1993, and was notable for being eight times bigger than its predecessor.

Super Mario 2 featured the first appearance of the bad guy Wario, Mario’s evil alter-ego.
