A report by freelance specialists Elance shows that more and more employers are hiring online and the UK has seen a 55% increase in online job recruitment within the last 12 months.

Elance, a platform for online freelancers, says that the report shows similar activity across the EU, with the biggest growth in online hiring being in Italy at 87%.

The first ever European Online Employment Report showed that more work is now being carried out in the cloud across a range of industries, and the UK is leading the way as the top hiring country.

UK employers are also the third biggest online hirer worldwide and European contractors remain in high demand.

Earnings are also on the rise. It was reported that UK freelancers now earn more than 51% than they did a year ago, good news in the current economical climate.

Freelancers continue to see contract availability improve as the trend continues to grow worldwide, showing a 107% growth over the past year.

“The UK is at the forefront of the online worker trend in Europe,” said Fabio Rosati, CEO of Elance.

“Across the country, businesses are embracing the flexibility that a freelance workforce offers and contractors are snapping up opportunities to work online at a time when traditional employment routes are flat-lining.”

“This global trend frees businesses up to recruit the best people for the job in a quick and efficient way. Across our platform, companies are using freelancers to change the way they work and succeed like never before.”

London companies hire the most freelancers in the UK, but other areas and cities are all “seeing impressive growth.”

A wide range of disciplines are offered on the Elance platform including writers, web developers, graphic design and programmers and the demand for creative talents is apparently booming.

However, the demand for other professionals is also growing, especially those who work in the engineering sector.

Legal professionals are also sought after and a sharp increase in interest has been shown for those who possess 3D multimedia skills.

Unsurprisingly, there has also been a notable increase in employers seeking contractors for iOS and Android app development.
