Well, would you believe it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launched on Tuesday, and before the week is out, it has been declared the best selling game ever seen.
That is, the best selling game since Black Ops, which was the best selling game since Modern Warfare 2.
Who says the games industry is becoming predictable these days…
EA was pleased with Battlefield 3 which shifted some 5 million copies in its debut week, a new all-time record for the company.
However, Modern Warfare 3 has gone several better than that, as everyone knew it would. According to Activision’s internal estimates, MW3 managed to rack up 6.5 million sales, not in its first week, but in the first 24 hours on sale.
And that isn’t a global figure, either, but the sales for the US and UK. Which rather leaves Battlefield 3 in the dust…
The estimated sell through for the game is $400 million in that first day, up from the $360 million which Black Ops achieved, and Modern Warfare 2′s $310 million.
Not only that, but the game also triggered a new record for the amount of simultaneous gamers logged on to Xbox Live.
Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, commented: “We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories.”
“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
It’ll be interesting to see what the figures for subscription to the Call of Duty Elite service turn out to be.
